Stars Shine in Darkness: My Journey from Refugee to Refuge follows the compelling life journey of Raveen Arora, a 2021 Nobel Peace Prize nominee, from the blighted streets of old Calcutta (now Kolkata) to the beckoning opportunities of the modern American West. Having grown up in poverty, Arora became a humanitarian early on in his life. His core values of empathy, multiculturalism, and compassion were nurtured by his family, his grandfather who taught him that stars shine in darkness, and early iconic mentors like Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Dalai Lama. Arora provided emergency essentials to Tibetan refugees in the 1960s, as well as vaccination clinics and food to Bangladesh refugees in Calcutta in the 1970s—a defining experience that helped determine the trajectory of his life. When he moved to the United States in 1984, he shared his vision of corporate social responsibility, weaving diversity, and Inclusion into all his ventures. A lifetime of humanitarian actions led to his Think Human initiative and his Nobel Peace Prize nomination.
